Soybean oil refinery plant includes a series processing procedures as degumming, neutralization, bleaching, deodorization and winterisation. In general there are two methods of soybean oil refining, they are physical refining and chemical refining.

Soybean oil refinery plant includes a series processing procedures as degumming, neutralization, bleaching, deodorization and winterisation. In general there are two methods of soybean oil refining process, one is physical refining and the other is chemical refining. However, no matter what kinds of refining methods, they are all done with the help of various oil processing equipment and machinery, and are used to refine almost all kinds of oil extracted from oil seeds like sunflower seeds, peanuts , sesame seeds, and soya bean seeds etc.

Soybean Oil Physical Refining:
In Physical Refining, Soybean Oil is subject to distillation to remove free fatty acids. The alkali treatment is completely avoided. This reduces the amount of waste water and eliminates production of soap. This process is becoming more popular.

Soybean Oil Chemical Refining:
In Chemical Refining, Soybean Oil is treated with caustic lye for separation of free fatty acids from oil. This is a conventional process that can be applied to all oils. A byproduct of alkali refining is soap-stock, which is used for manufacture of low quality washing soap. Alternately, the soap-stock can be treated with acid to recover fatty acids. The waste-water from refinery requires extensive treatment. This can be avoided by alternate Physical Refining process.

Main Steps of soybean oil refinery plant:
1. Crude Oil Degumming:Degumming is the first step in soybean oil refinery plant. In this step gums in crude oil are removed by hydration with the help of phosphoric acid.
2. Neutralization: In this step free fatty acids are neutralized by using sodium hydroxide and convert them into soap. Additional impurities are also removed by adsorption on soap.
3. Bleaching: During bleaching process , unwanted pigments are adsorbed physically and oil will become much clearer.
4. Deodorization: Deodorization machine is used to remove unacceptable odors by steam distillation during soybean oil refinery plant, the odoriferous compound are stripped off with the help of live injected steam into heated oil under high vacuum pressure.
5. Dewaxing (necessary for cold areas)
Some kinds of oil like sunflower, maize germ or corn oil have waxes inside, if these impurities are not removed, the oil will freeze easily under low temperature, thus effecting oil quality and appearance. so this process is necessary in extremely cold areas.

Main Refining Processes for Soybean Oil Refinery Plant:
1. Degumming Process  :Some impurity, such as Phospholipid, gum, and protein, can be dissolved into oil when there is no water, but once there is water in oil, these impurities can be dissolved into water. So, in degumming section of soybean oil refinery plant, we use the hot water to wash crude oil for two-three times to remove these impurities.

2. Neutralizing/Neutralization Process:The crude oil is fed into the neutralizer and mixed with small amounts of degumming agent such as phosphoric acid to help remove gums.Free fatty acids are removed from the oil by adding caustic soda and heating it at 60˚ then stirring the mixture. Heating helps caustic soda to react with the fatty acids to form the soap material. Once the soap material settles in the neutralizer machine, it is collected with soap pans while the oil is washed with water to remove any traces of soap or any alkaline particles.

3. Decolorizing Process :The neutralized oil requires bleaching machine to get rid of colors. This is done by adding the oil in a bleacher machine whereby it is heated to remove any moisture it might have and then mixed with earth bleach and activated carbon. These two properties absorb any colors after which the oil is passed through a filter to separate oil from earth bleach and carbon. The result is golden light oil.

4. Deodorizing  Process:The golden light oil has unpleasant odors which result from materials such as aldehydes, ketones, tocopherols and phenols among other odiferous elements. Deodorizing process of soybean oil refinery plant helps remove these odors by adding the oil in the deodorizer and heating it above at very high temperature ranging from 110˚ to 220˚ and under very high vacuum. This deodorizing process helps get rid of all odors.
